The early morning sun was but a pale glow behind roiling banks of slate-gray clouds when Captain Elena Reyes stood on the weather-beaten dock of Silvercrest Harbor, her braided hair whipped by an unforgiving breeze. She surveyed the harbor with unwavering calm—eyes as steely as the compass she carried in her coat pocket—though the world around her bristled with charged anticipation. Salt spray flecked the air, and the cries of gulls echoed against hulls secured at the piers. Somewhere beyond the breakwater, the sea heaved in restless rhythm, its waves cresting like jagged white teeth eager to taste the air.
The schooner Valkyrie, Elena’s pride and command, lay anchored beyond the captain’s dock. Her dark oak hull gleamed with fresh tar, and her sails were furled tight against the masts. Crewmen scurried along her decks, hauling in lines and stowing gear, while in the quarterdeck’s shadow, Elena’s first mate, Tomas Moreno, barked orders. Moreno was a veteran of countless voyages—his sunken scars and grizzled beard testament to days and nights spent at the mercy of the sea. Yet even he glanced skyward now, a frown creasing his weathered forehead.
“Elena,” Moreno called, voice carrying over the lapping water. “Storm’s cold front moves in faster than expected. Barometer’s plummeting—weather charts predict a gale by dawn.”
She nodded, lifting a gloved hand to shield her eyes from stray spray. “A storm’s no enemy we can avoid forever,” she replied, soft but firm. “The Valkyrie was built for trials, and so were we. Let every man and woman know—this voyage is timed. We leave within the hour.”
A ripple of murmurs ran through the crew as they paused, looking from Moreno back to Elena. Nervous whispers flitted among the seamen: tales of ships lost to sudden tempests, of hulls smashed and lives scattered across the infinite sea. But Elena’s gaze was unwavering. She strode down the gangplank with resolute steps, cloak billowing behind her like a banner of defiance.
Below the deck, the ship’s hold was already bustling: supplies of salted meat, barrels of fresh water, and sacks of hardtack were being lashed securely to the timbers. Lanterns swung in metal cages, throwing and catching the dank wooden beams in oscillating patterns. In one corner, the ship’s cook—a burly woman named Yara—tended pots of thick porridge, the scent of onions and spices cutting through the salty air.
