When explorer Leif Langdon stumbled upon an Alaskan valley hidden by a mirage, he was astounded by what he found. Here was a temporally displaced society, cut off from the rest of the world, who worshipped a mysterious malevolent entity known as Khalk’ru, the Dissolver. To complicate matters, Leif was hailed as the reincarnation of Dwayanu, the greatest warrior sworn to Khalk’ru. Both Lur, the Witch-Woman, and Evalie, beloved of the people who opposed the Dissolver, believed him to be Dwayanu—and he believed it himself when Dwayanu’s memories and personality resurfaced!
The Dwellers in the Mirage is one of the most important novels in fantasy fiction, proving to be immensely popular upon its release and having wide-ranging influence in the years since. As Deuce Richardson explains in the afterword, Dwellers inspired Robert E. Howard in many ways, not the least of which was the creation of Conan the Cimmerian.
When Dwellers was first published, A. Merritt was forced to change the ending at his editor’s insistence. For the first time ever, the Definitive Edition of Dwellers presents the novel with the ending exactly as Merritt wished it, without editorial interference. Additionally, the commonly-used ending, as well as a previously unpublished draft, are also included.
