Poverty in the Victorian Era is not for the faint of heart. It is even worse for a woman with a pretty face.
Anna wants nothing more than independence. The day she leaves the workhouse to be a paid servant, she is sure her luck is finally turning. But instead of settling into a cot in the attic for the rest of her life, her mistress, who is savagely jealous of her pretty face, accuses her of stealing. A soldier takes up her cause, but when he, in return, is accused of murder, Anna believes she is cursed.
Why is anyone who gets close to her either dead or left in dire circumstances? Is fate so cruel or are there mortal hands manipulating every step she takes? Why does it feel like Anna is always being watched? Is it possible, she has become the very center of a tense standoff, or has her vanity run away with her yet again?
