The sky above the Vale of Lianthos was a tapestry of bruised purples and weary grays as dusk settled over the rolling hills. A gentle mist wound its way through copse and glade, softening the outline of distant towers and the forest beyond. The air, tinged with the faint perfume of night-blooming lilies, seemed to hold its breath, waiting for something—an omen, a spark, a stir of destiny. It was here, at the edge of the world’s whispering woods, that two souls wandered unknowingly toward the same turning point in their lives.
1. The Wanderer
Alora moved with quiet purpose through a grove of silver birches, her cloak brushing the pale leaves that shimmered like moonlight fallen upon the earth. Beneath the hood, her dark hair was pulled back in a loose braid, threaded with tiny, iridescent beads that caught stray beams of fading light. Each bead represented a memory of home—small tokens she had gathered in her travels: a shell from the southern seas, a feather from an albatross, a fragment of polished glass from a southern desert oasis. But those memories felt distant and brittle now, leaving her with an ache she could neither name nor soothe.
She had heard of the Vale’s strange energies—rumors of an ancient prophecy that spoke of “kindred spirits” bound by fate to avert a looming calamity. In her heart, she did not know if she believed in prophecies, but something had drawn her northward, toward this place where mortal lives and cosmic forces collided. Perhaps it was the nightmares—visions of a world undone by darkness, of skies torn open and hearts twisted by fear. Or perhaps it was simply the pull of destiny, whispering her name through every village inn and traveler’s camp.
As she paused beside a crystalline pool fed by an underground spring, Alora knelt and traced a hand through the cool water. Ripples danced outward in widening circles, and for a moment she glimpsed something beneath the surface: a flash of silver light, like a sword’s edge or a shooting star. She froze, her breath catching. The vision vanished as quickly as it came, leaving only her reflection staring back—eyes wide, questioning, determined.
She stood, pressed her palm to the water’s edge, and whispered, “Show me the way.”
The forest answered with silence. Yet within that hush, Alora felt a tremor, a heartbeat echoing through the ground. She rose, tightening her cloak. Somewhere, not far off, another presence moved through the dusk.
